FIL (Filecoin)
Filecoin (FIL) fuels the Filecoin network, a decentralized, peer-to-peer file storage network designed to enable universal storage, retrieval, and hosting of digital information. FIL tokens serve as a medium of payment for these services and as an incentive to ensure long-term, reliable file storage. The Filecoin network comprises two main participant types: storage miners, who provide data storage space and earn FIL for correctly storing data, and retrieval miners, who earn FIL by delivering data to clients and proving successful delivery. Clients can engage with the network by placing orders in either the storage or retrieval markets. Filecoin's underlying blockchain, which records transactions and the proofs of network participants, employs a hybrid consensus mechanism. This mechanism combines proof-of-replication, ensuring unique data replication by storage miners, with proof-of-spacetime, verifying the duration of data storage.
