Zcash, denoted as ZEC, is a privacy-centric cryptocurrency, offering enhanced anonymity. Based on Bitcoin's codebase, Zcash employs the zk-SNARKs protocol, enabling transaction verification without exposing sensitive details like sender, receiver, or transaction amount. Zcash provides two address types: transparent (akin to Bitcoin addresses and visible on the blockchain) and shielded (concealing transaction details). Users can transact between these address types based on their privacy needs. Launched in 2016 by Zooko Wilcox-O'Hearn, Zcash uses the Equihash proof-of-work algorithm, designed to resist specialized hardware, and shares Bitcoin's 21 million coin cap.
